As communities across Canada celebrate National Volunteer Week,
Hamilton Child and Family Supports (HCFS) is proud to celebrate the extraordinary
dedication and impact of its volunteer drivers, individuals whose compassion and
commitment quietly transform lives every day.

In the past year alone, 26 active volunteer drivers completed approximately 11,140
drives, covering more than 700,000 kilometers. Together, these volunteers represent
nearly 400 years of cumulative service, a remarkable testament to long-standing
community commitment.

“Volunteers are the heartbeat of our organization,” said Bryan Shone, Executive
Director. “Every ride provided is about so much more than transportation. Volunteer
drivers create stability during uncertain times, offer connection during moments of
transition, and bring care and kindness when it’s needed most. Their impact is profound
and deeply meaningful.”

Volunteer drivers regularly support children navigating complex family situations and
offer reassurance during difficult transitions. Drivers become trusted, familiar faces
who help children feel safe, seen and supported.

This year also marks a special moment of recognition for Wayne Evans, who recently
concluded 30 years of volunteer service. Over three decades, Wayne exemplified
reliability, warmth and dedication, leaving a lasting impression on countless children,
families and staff. “Being a consistent presence for children and bringing comfort
during difficult moments has been the most rewarding part,” Wayne shared when
reflecting on his service.

Stories like Wayne’s are echoed throughout the volunteer community. Drivers
frequently adapt to last-minute schedule changes, long-distance trips, and emotionally
challenging circumstances—all with patience, flexibility, and respect.
As one staff member shared, “where would we be without the on-the-ground
volunteers that keep us going? You are more than just drivers – you are providers of
connection and hope between children and their families Thank you does not convey
the deep gratitude for our drivers. We see you.”

National Volunteer Week provides an opportunity to not only say thank you but also
recognize how vital these contributions are to the well-being of children and families
across the Hamilton area. “To every volunteer who gives their time, their heart, and
their miles—thank you,” added Shone. “We see you, we value you, and we are deeply
grateful for everything you do”.
